Kings Lynn Mart – We’re still here for you!

The Mart has arrived and Tuesday Market Place is full of all the fun of the fair. This was the scene yesterday (that’s us on the left-hand side). We’re harder to see, but we’re still here for you though! If you’re wondering what the Mart is all about, here’s ten things you might not know about it…

/ The Mart has been pitching up in the centre of King’s Lynn for more than 800 years.

/ It was granted a Royal charter by King Henry VIII in 1537.

/ Each year the Mart traditionally opens on Valentine’s Day.

/ The fair marks the start of the travelling season for fairground families, many of whom have been working at the Mart for generations.

/ Locals have a saying – Mart weather – for the February cold snap which often sees rides being set up in the snow.

/ The Tuesday Market Place is a stone’s throw from North Lynn, where fairground rides such as the famous gallopers were built at Frederick Savage’s ironworks.

/ In the 19th Century, Savage would showcase his latest rides at the Mart.

/ In 1897, Randall Williams became the first showman to display moving pictures at the Mart.

/ Before the fair is officially opened by West Norfolk Mayor Carol Bower on Wednesday, it will be blessed by the Bishop of Lynn.

/ When it finishes in Lynn, the Mart traditionally moves a few miles up the road to Wisbech.
